Announcements with Course Links

One of the great things about posting announcements in a course is that you select to “Send a copy of this announcement immediately”. This means that students will receive a copy of the announcement in their email.

Another great thing is that you can add a course link directly in the announcement. This can be helpful if you would like for your students to access a newly added content area or item in the course. For example if you have recently posted a test on Blackboard you can create an announcement and insert a link of the Item or Content Area directly in the announcement. This is done with the “Course Link” option which is available when you are creating an announcement.

However, when you post a link to a Content Area or Item in the announcement with the “Course Link” option the link will only be visible to students from the “Announcements” content area of the course site. The students will not see the link of the Content Area or Item in the copy of the announcement that they receive via email.

Workaround

When creating the announcement instead of providing a link to the content area or item using the “Course Link” option you can copy and paste the URL of the content area or item directly into the Virtual Text Box Editor of the Create Announcement page.

1) Navigate to the Content Area or Item that you would like to provide the link for. For example; if you would like to link the “Assignments” Content Area then navigate directly to the “Assignments” Content Area.

2) Copy the URL of the Content Area or Item.  For Example; in the Image below, we are copying the URL of the “Assignments” Content Area.

Image 4: Select the URL of the content area and copy it. In this example, the URL of the “Assignments” content area will be copied.

NOTE: To copy the URL of the Content Area you must first highlight it and use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + C if you’re on a PC or COMMAND + C  if you’re on a Mac. You can also right click on the URL while it’s highlighted and select “Copy”.

3) Begin creating your Announcement and select a word or group of words from the Virtual Text Box Editor that you would like to add a Hyperlink. For example; if you would like to add the hyperlink or URL of the Content Area to “CLICK HERE” then select it in the Virtual Text Box Editor.

5) The Insert/Edit Link window will open. Paste the URL into the “Link Path” Box and Click Insert.

NOTE: To paste the URL you will first have to click on the “Link Path” Box and use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + V if you’re on a PC or COMMAND + V if you’re on a Mac. You can also right click on the URL while it’s highlighted and select “Paste”.

6) Select the “Send copy of this announcement immediately” Checkbox and click “Submit”.
