Mark and Grade Attendance

There are currently two attendance tools available within Blackboard - Blackboard Attendance, and Qwickly Attendance Classic.

Qwickly Attendance Classic offers additional functionality than Blackboard Attendance (including a check-in feature), and is available to all faculty, staff and students in Blackboard. Both tools allows instructors to track the number of class meetings students have attended, arrived late or missed. If made available, students can also review any grades connected to their attendance and track their progress. Instructors can use attendance as part of grade calculations similiar to an assignment grade column.

Considerations for Blackboard Attendance

• By default accumulative attendance is set to 100% - reviewing the weighting of this category is recommended.
• The attendance tool is still a manual process, and student polling-based attendance, is not a feature set of this tool.

• Can I still mark students manually?

  Yes, instructors can use list mode to take attendance manually. 

• How can I make Qwickly Check-In Mode more secure to promote academic integrity?

  To enhance security during check-in mode, it is recommended to set a timer for a short duration and require a PIN.

• How can I use Qwickly Attendance for longer classes that have breaks?

  Instructors have the option to run a check-out session at the end of class to ensure students are present throughout the entirety of class. Learn more about check-out mode here.

• Can I automate emails for students who are absent?

  Instructors have the ability to send an email alert to students that are marked absent. This feature can be enabled in your settings.
  

• Will Qwickly mark students late in Check-In Mode?

  No, at the moment, Qwickly will not automatically mark students late through check-in mode. Instructors will need to manually mark students late through the attendance record after check-in has ended.

• What if a student can’t check in because of technical difficulties?

  If a student forgets their phone or is having technical difficulties checking in, the instructor can manually mark them as present after check-in closes.

• When should I begin a check-in session?

  If your attendance policy includes tardiness, it is recommended to initiate the check-in process at the beginning of class. However, if your attendance policy does not include tardiness, instructors have the option to use check-in mode at the end of class to take attendance.

• In what ways can I provide students with feedback regarding their attendance?

  Aside from automating absence emails, instructors can also leave students private and public comments on their records.

• How do students check in?

  Once the instructor starts the session students will be able to check in through Blackboard Learn. If you have enabled a timer, students must check in within the designated time. If you have enabled a PIN, the students must enter the PIN to check in.

• How can I share the PIN with students once I start a check-in session?

  Instructors may display their screen on the projector so students can see the PIN and check in within the allotted time. If you did not enable a timer, instructors can write the PIN on the whiteboard for students to check in throughout the class session.
