Getting Started with Blackboard Learn Ultra

Blackboard Learn is the course management system used by University of Miami faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students. Blackboard Learn continues to be an important platform for facilitating teaching and learning. The Learning Platforms team currently supports courses and organizations as Original Course View and Ultra Course View.

Accessing Blackboard Learn Ultra
In order to receive a Blackboard account, you must have an active UM CaneID. To access Blackboard Learn Ultra, follow the below steps.
- Go to courses.miami.edu
- Click the Log In button
- Enter your full UM AccountID as the username (e.g., sebastian@miami.edu) and the corresponding password.
- You may need to confirm your log in using multi-factor authentication.
Enrollment in Courses
Every semester, a Blackboard course site is automatically created for each course offered by the University of Miami.
- Course sites become accessible to the instructor approximately eight (8) weeks prior to the published course start date.
- Faculty members will automatically be enrolled in a course if assigned to a course in CaneLink as the course instructor.
- Students are automatically enrolled in a course, if enrolled to a course in Canelink.
- Teaching assistants or staff not assigned to the course in Canelink will need to be enrolled by the instructor or Learning Platforms Help Desk.
Accessing your Courses
To access all of your courses from the current and previous semesters:
- Select ‘Courses’ from the left-hand menu.
- Use the Current Courses drop down menu to select the appropriate term. For example, Fall 2022.
- For quick and convenient access, you can use the search tool to find a specific course and you can favorite the courses you use most frequently by clicking the star icon.
Accessing your Organizations
To access any organization you are enrolled in:
- Select ‘Organization’ from the left-hand menu.
- Use the Current Organization drop down menu to select the appropriate term, if applicable. For example, Spring 2022.
- For quick and convenient access, you can use the search tool to find a specific organization and you can favorite the courses you use most frequently by clicking the star icon.
Uses for Blackboard Learn Ultra
Blackboard is used a variety of ways to support teaching and learning at the University of Miami.
- Academic Courses: Blackboard Learn Ultra allows all course instructors to access an online academic course to communicate, distribute learning material and assess students.
- Organizations: Blackboard Organizations are secure sites used by departments, or programs, to communicate events, specific resources, program deadlines, or onboard new students.
- Course Templates: For schools, colleges, divisions, or instructional design units, Blackboard Learn Ultra is used also to design course templates for upcoming semesters.
